I personally have a technique to see who is the "real" mean girl, and who is just being defensive. I try to make them laugh! If they're nice, they relax once they realize I'm not out to attack them. If they're bitchy, they "ignore" my attempts to make friends or make snarky comments. Then I know they have "daddy issues" so I don't bother with them anymore.

I think girls are mean out of jealousy, low self esteem, OR defense against others who suffer from jealousy and low self-esteem. I've met plenty of girls who seem bitchy, but are nice deep down inside. But they front bitchiness because they're used to being attacked by other females. Once they relax, they're pretty cool. Then there are some who are really bitchy because they're jealous and insecure, and that mean nature doesn't go away.
